Sciarid flies are a constant in store-bought growing media. These tiny flies, or fungus gnats, as they are often called, are relentless. They do no actual harm, though.

I am an anti-chemical sprayer, and I experimented with Yates sand until serendipity fell into my hands, and a Chinese university approached me with some alternative options.

This product is 95% paper, with some waterproofing PP - it works to attract the flying insect with its colour and texture.

Also, take care of house flies.

Due to the high freight cost, it can only be purchased with another item, so stock up on something else. It's a great time to introduce Sea-Hume granules!

Results

Basic! The insect sticky traps catch the adult flies; no more eggs are laid once all the adults are gone. Pest gone!

1x A4 sheet makes up to 9 individual traps

Keep the cut-up sheet in the pot, as per the pictures. Chopsticks work well. It lasts until you decide it looks full or unsightly. There were no chemicals or mess.

A Lesson Learned, sprays not needed :)

This experience taught me an important lesson: do not underestimate simple solutions. Sometimes the answers we seek require a willingness to explore new options.

Happy bugging!
